As part of the Haitian Chamber of Commerce in Japan’s ongoing exploration of the global use, presence, and value of Haitian vetiver, we had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Masuda, a seasoned Japanese perfumer based in Paris with extensive experience working with vetiver, particularly Haitian vetiver.

What stood out to us was the level of appreciation and importance placed on Haitian vetiver by Masuda and by some of the most respected names in the world of perfumery; several of whom we also had the privilege of meeting during our time in Paris.

These conversations offered us a fascinating perspective on how Haitian vetiver is perceived within the global fragrance industry, and the role this exceptional Haitian ingredient continues to play in the world of scent.

On the other hand, it was also fascinating to learn more about fragrance creation, it truly sounds like arts; First, the passion for the profession, the level of attention brought to every detail, and the creativity are the most flagrant traits that we could notice from the perfumers that we interacted with. Such as, when Mr Masuda speaks about vetiver, he enthusiastically described the qualities of the ingredient that have made him enjoy creating perfumes with it, and when in details about whaat makes it such an interesting material to work with.

At the same time, his curiosity goes beyond the ingredient itself. Mr. Masuda has never been to Haiti and has never had the opportunity to see how vetiver is cultivated, simply how the product he works with is produced. He expressed his desire to one day see the process for himself — and, perhaps most importantly, to meet the people who produce such ingredient that is instrumental to his creations.

For us, this was a particularly interesting part of the conversation, discovering his curiosity for the land, the cultivation process, and the people behind it.
